The Record Music Magazine Win Tickets to See Boom!
Ravindra Upadhyay
Last month we brought you the five finalists of the Samsung [V] Super Singer contest. This month we bring you the winner. Ravindra Upadhyay, an advocate from Jaipur, tells The Record about life as the newest voice of the country.

Ever since I won, it's been overwhelming. That day I felt like I was in a dream that just wouldn't end! I couldn't sleep that night and the next day I had interviews to do immediately, so for a day or two I didn't realize what was happening. Now as life slowly gets back to normal it is sinking in.

My wife was so happy when I won. It is the first time I've taken part in such a big show and it was really special that my entire family was there to watch in the audience and share my big moment. God has heard my prayers.

The best thing for me is that my two month old daughter was in the audience and was listening very intently as I sang. [Laughs] I watched some video clips of the show and saw that she was listening so carefully with her eyes wide open. [Laughs] I liked her reaction.

There are many invitations for me back home. The governor of Rajasthan has asked to meet me. People are very happy that I've brought glory to the name of Jaipur. If you notice, in the last two singing contests there was someone from Jaipur in the finals. So people from back home are really proud. There is so much talent in Jaipur, they just need a good platform and support to flourish.

I got a surprise call from a friend I hadn't met for over fifteen years! I still can't believe how he managed to track me down. We met last when we were in school and now he is here in Mumbai. He watched me on TV and then tracked me down. I couldn't imagine I would meet him! It was really great catching up and lots of old memories were revived. He told me that ever since my flute-playing days in school everyone thought I would definitely pursue music in some way. But no one imagined I would win such a big contest! [Laughs]

There is one fan from Muradabad who keeps calling me, saying he's my first fan, and a really big admirer. I have no idea how he got my contact. I'm really happy though that they all like my voice. That is most important.

Preparations for the Super Singer album are done. I've met with Vishal-Shekharji and they are planning a peppy yet slightly different song for me. I will meet Himeshji today and see what he has planned. My schedule is slightly busy but I'm trying to concentrate purely on the singing and I religiously do riyaz. If I have to perform anywhere, at any time, I must be ready. Now I have a title attached to me Samsung [V] Super Singer and to live up to it is a big responsibility. I pray to God that I can do it justice and I am working really hard every day.
