The Record Music Magazine Win Tickets to See Boom!
Shakira
It’s a three-and-a-half-minute long blend of carnival colours, Colombian rhythms and a swivelling of hips that makes you want to get up and shake your body. Hips Don’t Lie is the latest single from Colombian sensation Shakira and has sent her racing up charts worldwide.

A duet with The Fugees’ Wyclef Jean, Hips Don’t Lie appears on the re-release of her already popular album Oral Fixation Vol. 2. The strength of this song sent the album up a staggering 92 places on the Billboard chart straight to #6, while the single has been jumping up the charts 20 places at a time! If the numbers don’t convince you that this is a song to watch out for, the video will!

Dressed in fiery orange and the contrasting peaceful white, Shakira does what she does best ~ shake her hips like no one else! She even manages to dance well while sitting in chair, something we at The Record have not seen before. The video is complete with dancers dressed in outfits from Colombia’s Carnaval de Barranquilla, which was has been held every year since 1888. The festival also features cumbia dancing, a Colombian folk dance that Shakira performs with ease.

Directed by English director Sophie Muller, the video also features Shakira dancing in a backless top, her back covered in jewels that catch the light as she moves. But this is not the only video for the song. Circulating online is an alternate or “Fans Only” version, made up of home videos of her fans dancing and lip-synching to the song. This video exudes the same energy as Shakira’s official video, proving that the lady has an energy that’s nothing if not contagious.
