The Record Music Magazine Win Tickets to See Boom!
Céline Dion
Four years after her last studio release, this Canadian superstar is back with an album that promises to offer up some pleasant surprises as the excellent first single Taking Chances itself indicates.

Read on for exclusive inputs from the diva on stepping back into the studio, her favourite new song, working with new talent and how she feels after so many years in the music business.

I’m Recording New Songs Again…
It’s been a while for me. I was really focused for the last few years here in Las Vegas. It’s been extraordinary but now it feels like another door is opening and I’m recording new songs again and it feels like it’s the first time so I’m intimidated by this whole thing even though I’ve been doing it for so many years, it feels like the first... I’m having lots of fun! I’m excited.

I Recorded A Song Called [That’s Just] The Woman In Me...
The song was presented to me about 12 to 15 years ago. I wanted to do this song but it was not a good time for me to record the song then. It was too edgy, too grown up and too forward. It was too Janis Joplin, straight down to the soul... It’s not fancy ~ it’s gutsy, it’s amazing! I wanted to really make it raw and pure. The Woman In Me is who I am and it represents every song on the album. It brings me to a place that’s in me that I have never met before. I brought it back because it was already a part of me for 15 years and it needed to come out. No one had recorded it, so I said ‘It’s a good sign. It’s for me… I think I’m ready.’

Even Though We’ve Been Doing This For So Many Years, We’re Still Amazed…
We’re still finding songs that we love; we still want to work with people that we haven’t worked with; we still want to work with people that we have worked with in the past. So it is exciting for me to record again.
I’m getting to love [working with producers Ben Moody and David Hodges] so much ~ they have different personalities, so that’s why the album has different songs as well. And [producer] John Shanks has an amazing sense of humour and he really makes me laugh! And I have to say I am enjoying very much working with him so it makes it very pleasant.

Every Day You Have A New Voice…
When your voice is feeling good and in top shape, you never want to leave [the studio]. You never want to go to bed and start another day, because every day your instrument changes. Every day you have a new voice. Whatever [your] day goes through, you sing that emotion so every day is different. So right now I feel great, it went pretty well, I feel pretty happy, I’m not even tired, my voice feels pretty strong… I could go on!

With Time, Life Gives You Amazing Gifts…
…and I’m singing about it. I’m realising through this album that maybe that’s why I’m having such a good time recording it; it’s because I am discovering new levels, new ways of doing this, even though I knew I had it in me… Maybe I never had the opportunity to give that back [through the songs]. I am doing it now more than ever because I love to ~ I always did love it but I don’t have to prove to myself that I can do it. I can just enjoy the ride and it’s much more fun and much more powerful and true.

Taking Chances is the perfect title for this next chapter in Céline’s musical journey, and it has also been true for most of the major events that have shaped her life. Staying true to the theme, we bring you five key moments in Céline’s life when taking a chance proved to be the best thing to have done.

Céline Pursues Her Dream To Be A Singer…
Céline came from humble beginnings ~ born in Charlemagne, a small town 30 miles east of Montreal, Quebec, Canada and the youngest of 14 children. The family was highly musical and each weekend the entire Dion clan would perform at live shows in town. Céline naturally began performing live from a very young age and by the time she was in her early teens she was composing her own songs. One such demo tape caught the attention of René Angélil, a well known manager.

René Angélil Believes In Céline’s Talent…
It was in early 1981 when René first heard the powerful voice of a young girl called Céline Dion. He was blown away by her ability and was such a firm believer in her talent that he even mortgaged his house to finance the recording of her debut album. Under his guidance, Céline began to hone her skills even further and soon began to receive recognition for her talent.
