GERI HALLIWELL – PASSION - EMI
Record Rating: **

Geri Halliwell - Passion - EMI The rumours of a Spice Girls reunion at Live 8 were highly exaggerated. It is clear that Baby, Ginger, Posh, Scary and Sporty are not desperate enough (yet) to bury egos, differences and hatchets to attempt to squeeze one final hurrah out of their short but financially rewarding recording career as a band. In place of another potentially catchy but eventually poisonous offering by the Fluffy Five we have a brand new album from The One Who Quit The Band First.

Geri Halliwell’s latest studio album Passion offers up a title track which features a string section supporting her in a jazz-like arrangement. It might seem like reason to sit up and take notice but by the time the track Desire unfurls, this has turned into a straight-out dance pop record.

The production on the project is slick enough but it is clear that Halliwell or her management seem to have assumed that she will enjoy success by taking a leaf out of Kylie Minogue’s neo-disco songbook. But whereas the sexuality and reedy vocals of the diminutive Aussie singer have worked to her advantage, the same warmed over beats and hooks when applied to Halliwell’s vocal delivery turn into a deflated soufflé that doesn’t seem likely to ever rise.

Perhaps Passion could complete the die-hard fan’s collection but the rest are better off waiting for either Kylie or the Spice Girls to take their act out to the music stores again.
