The Record Music Magazine Win Tickets to See Boom!
It’s official: this 19-year-old’s new track Umbrella is the #1 scorching hot hit of the summer! The song holds the record for the biggest debut in iTunes' history, beating out a record previously held by Shakira's Hips Don't Lie and take our word for it ~ it really is as good a track as the buzz suggests.

As Rihanna returns with a brand new album and a brand new look, we bring you up to date with everything you need to know about her: what Umbrella is all about, what ‘good girl gone bad’ means to her and what it’s like to have superstar Jay-Z guest star in your video. Check out this sneak peek at her new album. You will be seeing a lot more of Rihanna in our mag in the future!

Here’s an inside look at everything Umbrella in Rihanna’s own words.

On hearing the song for the first time…
When I first heard the track I fell in love with it, I just knew I had to have it. It is a really deep song…when it first starts off you just think it’s a sexy song but you have to listen to the lyrics. It is a really, really deep song. [I heard it and loved it and] then they said ‘We have a surprise for you’ and I couldn’t imagine what it was; and then I found out that the surprise was Jay-Z [actually performing] on the song! When I finally heard the track [with Jay-Z on it] I got goosebumps everywhere! I couldn’t believe I was shooting a video with Jay-Z and I have a song with him. It is just incredible. That takes everything to another level for me in terms of experiences in my career.

On the super stylish video…
I had a lot of say in the video this time. I talked to the director Chris Applebaum a lot before he wrote the treatment. He shot the video and did a phenomenal job. I wanted it to be an all-performance video – I feel [that kind of video] shows people who you are the most and who you have become [as an artist]. I felt it was important since it was the first single off the new album, with a new direction, new image and everything.

On working with Jay-Z…
Jay came in and did his thing and he is just amazing! It is such a difference working with him on a video and not just in the office or whatever [Rihanna is signed to Jay-Z’s record label]. He’s also on the record which is a big deal for me. I had so much fun on the video shoot; I can’t wait for everyone to see it.

This is what the superstar had to say about the song…
Umbrella was the kind of song that when you first heard it, you just knew it was going to be a smash and I really just wanted to be a part of it. Rihanna [as an artist] is on a journey of growth, so [for me] it’s not just about lending my vocals to a project. It’s a project and a person that I believe in.
